1. What types of home improvements need permits?
Permits are required for most permanent improvements and work regulated by
state or city codes.
Example of work requiring permits:
- Additions
- Remodeling
- Basement finishes
- Garages
- Sheds (if greater than 120 square feet of floor area)
- Decks
- Roofing/Reroofing
- Siding/Residing
- Windows
What types of home improvements do not require permits?
Example of work not requiring permits:
- Painting
- Changing wall or floor finishes
- Changing kitchen cabinets
- Landscaping

2.Where are my property lines?
Property lines can best be determined by calling a surveyor. Many surveyors
are listed in the Telephone Directory. The City of Albert Lea does not mark
property lines.
3. What if I have mold in my home?
We do not test for mold. Please see the following link for more infomration to rid your

4. Do I need a permit for Electrical system changes/additions?.
Yes.
The City of Albert Lea Fire & Inspection Department does not issue or inspect
electrical permits. Please contact the state electrical inspector concerning
permits and inspections for electrical work.
