Full-Time Firefighter Testing Process
Minimum Qualifications: Must be High School graduate or possess GED. Must have valid Minnesota driver’s license. Current 1st responder certification. Basic firefighter certification (1403). Must live within a 10 minute response time of the fire station within 6 months of being hired.
Procedures:
- Applications are received and screened by Fire Department Staff. Applicants that meet the minimum requirements will be notified of the process for taking the entry level written test.
- Applicants will contact Fire Department Office to set up an appointment to reserve a test date and time. Applicants need to allow 3 hours to take the test.
- Fire Department staff will administer and score the written test.
- Upon completion of scoring the tests they will be stored in a secure place.
- The passing score will be based on the recommendation of IPMA. The test will count for 40% of the applicants final score.
- Successful applicants will move on to the next step, the Physical Ability portion. This portion will be a pass/fail for Part 1, with a 9 minute maximum time limit for Part 2. This test will count for 10% of the applicants score. Applicants will be notified of the date and time of the testing. A practice session will also be scheduled but is not mandatory.
- No cuts will be made until all applicable veterans points are granted.
- A maximum of eight applicants will be chosen at this point to go on to the oral interview portion of the process. Applicants will be notified of their date and time for this portion of the test.
- The oral interview will count for 35% of the applicants final score.
- Education and experience points will be awarded at up to 15 points.
- Those not chosen for the immediate position will be kept on an eligibility list for up to one year from the testing date.
- Testing to upgrade the eligibility list will be done at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
