Demographic Highlights

  • In 2000 the City of Albert Lea had a population of 18,356, which is a 0.3% increase from 1990 (46 people). Growth is expected to be much stronger through 2010. Population projections from 2000 to 2010 show an increase of 604 persons, a 3.3% gain.
     
  • Household trends which are more reflective of housing needs illustrate very healthy growth for the community. In 2000, the City had 7,785 households which was a gain of 252 households from 1990 (3.3%). Projections from 2000 to 2010 show an increase of 270 households, a 3.5% gain.
     
  • Based on projected household growth, the increase of 270 households between 2000 and 2010 equates to an average growth of 27 households per year.
     
  • Between 2000 and 2010, the largest growth will occur in the 55 to 64 age segment (591 persons), 45 to 54 age segment (289 persons) and 25 to 34 age segment (182 persons).
     
  • The median age in Albert Lea was 41 according to the 2000 Census compared to Freeborn County at 40.4 and the State at 35.4.
     
  • The 2000 Census noted a median household income of $32,841 for the City of Albert Lea. In 2005 it was estimated to be $37,600.
