Sanitary Sewer System The sanitary sewer collection system is the 104 mile pipeline network that accepts all residential, commercial, and industrial sewage discharged into the system. Pipe sizes range from 6" to 36" in diameter. Incorporated into the collection system are 20 lift stations that pump the sewage. The lift stations are in areas where the sewage will not flow by means of gravity. The sewage for the entire community flows to a large lift station located at the site of the old waste treatment plant. This lift station is equipped with three pumps that are capable of pumping 12,000 gallons per minute each. The sewage is pumped from this lift station through a 36 inch pipe a distance of 5 miles to the new waste treatment plant. There are 1997 manholes located in the streets that allow for cleaning and inspection of the sewer system. Frequently Asked Question: What do I do if the sewer backs up into the basement? Call the City Utilities Department at 377-4377, and a crew will come out and check the mainline sewer and advise you. The crew will tell you if the mainline is okay and if it is, will advise you to call a plumber to open up your sewer service.
